Middleman
A middleman is a trusted third party who holds both the account and the payment during a private trade, releasing each only once both sides have delivered. It is how peer-to-peer deals avoid “you go first” stand-offs.
The risk is trusting the right middleman. A marketplace with escrow performs the same role automatically and accountably, which is why it is safer than arranging your own.
