Is It Safe to Buy a CS2 Account?

Buying a CS2 account can be reasonably safe, but it is never risk-free: it breaks the Steam Subscriber Agreement, Steam Support will side with the original owner if they try to recover the account, and a VAC ban on the account freezes every CS2 item in it. Your risk drops sharply when you buy through escrow, check the account before the seller is paid, and take over the email, password and Mobile Authenticator on the day it arrives. Here is what can actually go wrong and how to guard against each risk.

What Valve's rules say about buying an account

The Steam Subscriber Agreement states that you may not sell or charge others for the right to use your account, or otherwise transfer it. There is no official transfer tool, so every CS2 account sale works by handing over the full Steam login. Steam does not recognise that handover: if the person who created the account asks Steam Support to restore it and can prove ownership, Support will help them, not you.

In practice, most of the problems buyers run into come from that recovery risk and from the account's history, rather than from Valve singling out a quiet individual buyer. That is context, not permission: Valve can act on any account that breaks its rules. If you want the wider legal picture, see our guide on whether selling game accounts is legal.

Trade holds and restrictions: what to expect

Almost every account handover triggers at least one of Steam's security restrictions, so it helps to know them before you buy:

  • Removing a Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator blocks trading and the Community Market for 15 days. The seller's authenticator has to come off before you can add yours.
  • A new Mobile Authenticator means trades can be held for up to 15 days until it has been active for 7 days.
  • A password reset through account recovery restricts trading and the Market for 5 days (30 days if the account had no activity for more than two months).
  • CS2 trade protection: since July 2025, a CS2 item you receive in a trade can't be traded, sold or modified for 7 days, and the sender can reverse that trade during that window.

None of this stops you from playing. It only matters if your plan was to move the skins out of the account straight away.

Does Prime Status survive the handover?

Yes. Prime is a permanent, one-time upgrade tied to the account, so changing the email, password or authenticator doesn't remove it. It can no longer be earned by levelling up: since June 2021 the only way to add Prime is the $14.99 upgrade, which is why verifying the Prime flag before you pay is worth the minute it takes. Our explainer on what a CS2 Prime account is covers what it unlocks.

A safer way to buy: the checklist

Before you pay

  1. Buy on a platform that holds your payment in escrow until you confirm the account. Our roundup of the best sites to buy CS2 accounts explains what to compare.
  2. Confirm Prime Status, the Premier CS Rating or FACEIT level you are paying for, and the inventory, live in the client.
  3. Check the ban status on the account's Steam profile. Walk away from any VAC or game ban.
  4. Make sure the sale includes access to the original email inbox.

The day it arrives

  1. Change the account email to one you control, then change the email inbox's own password and turn on its 2FA.
  2. Change the Steam password and sign out of all other sessions.
  3. Add the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator on your own phone and store the recovery code offline. Our guide to enabling 2FA on your game account walks through it.
  4. Take dated screenshots of the inventory, Prime status and rating in case you need to open a dispute.

The step-by-step email change is covered in how to change your Steam email, and what to do after buying a game account has the cross-game version of this routine.

How BuyAccount handles CS2 purchases

On BuyAccount, payment is held in escrow until you confirm delivery or the 14-day escrow period ends, the seller delivers the login details in your order thread rather than by email or Discord, and our published buyer protection covers seller recovery, listing mismatch, failed delivery and fraudulent accounts for 14 days after delivery. The exact terms are on our buyer protection page, and how it works shows the full order flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the seller take a CS2 account back?

They can try. Steam Support restores accounts to the person who created them if that person can prove ownership, for example with the original email, purchase records or CD keys. Taking over the email and every credential immediately, and buying with a dispute window that covers recovery, is your protection.

What happens to the skins if the account has a VAC ban?

A VAC ban is permanent and makes the account's CS2 items untradeable: they stay in the inventory but can't be traded, sold on the Market or used in trade-ups. Always check the ban status before the seller is paid.

How long until I can trade skins on a bought account?

Usually around 15 days. Removing the seller's Mobile Authenticator blocks trading and the Market for 15 days, and trades are held until your new authenticator has been active for 7 days. Playing isn't affected.

Is a Steam account with lots of games riskier than a CS2 account?

Generally yes. A long purchase history gives the original owner more evidence to reclaim the account through Steam Support, while a play-focused CS2 account with its original email handed over leaves them far less to work with.

Before you commit, estimate a fair price with the CS2 account value calculator, read how much a CS2 account is worth, and check the current listings on our CS2 accounts page.
