Burst Damage

Burst damage is a large amount of damage packed into a very short window — typically a single combo that can delete a target in a second or two. Assassins and many mages are built around it, aiming to kill a priority enemy before that enemy can react or be peeled.

Burst is countered by defensive layers that blunt the key spike: a shield, a well-timed heal, or hard crowd control that interrupts the combo. It contrasts with sustained DPS, which deals its damage steadily over a fight. If you want to practise high-burst assassins from scratch, fresh League of Legends accounts are a common way to learn a new champion safely.
