Split-Pushing

Split-pushing is pushing a side lane on your own, away from your team, to threaten towers and force the enemy to respond. If they send one player, you can usually win the duel or escape; if they send several, your team gains a numbers advantage everywhere else on the map.

It is a macro strategy favoured by self-sufficient top laners and duelists who can fight isolated and pressure structures fast. Good split-pushing creates a constant dilemma for the enemy, often opening the map without a single teamfight.
