CS2 Stickers Explained (Capsules, Crafts and Value)

CS2 stickers are cosmetic decals you apply to weapon skins: they come mostly from sticker capsules, you can place up to five per weapon anywhere on its visible side, scraping wears them down until they're gone, and collectors combine them into "crafts". Early tournament stickers, above all the Katowice 2014 holos, are among the most valuable cosmetic items in the game. If you've ever wondered what those small icons on a gun mean, or why a single sticker can be worth tens of thousands of dollars, this guide explains it.

Where stickers come from

Most stickers come from a sticker capsule. A capsule works like a case: you open it and receive a random sticker from that capsule's pool. Capsules fall into a few broad groups:

  • Tournament capsules: sold around Major championships, with team logos and, in many capsules, player autographs in several finishes. A share of sales has historically gone to the teams and players.
  • Community capsules: artwork selected from community submissions, usually more playful than the esports designs.
  • Other releases: stickers also appear through operations, events and the in-game Armory from time to time.

Stickers and weapon skins mostly come from separate sources: cases give you weapons, capsules give you stickers. For the wider picture of what cosmetics are worth, see our guide on whether CS2 skins are a good investment.

Applying, positioning and scraping

To apply a sticker, select it in your inventory, choose the weapon and place it. Since Valve's February 2024 update, every weapon supports up to five stickers, and you can put each one anywhere on the visible side of the gun and rotate it freely, with a zoom view for precise placement. Before that update, stickers snapped to a handful of fixed slots.

Once you confirm placement, the sticker is permanently bonded to that weapon; you can't peel it off and move it to another gun. What you can do is scrape it. Each scrape wears the sticker further, and scraping past the last stage removes it entirely without returning it to your inventory. Some players scrape on purpose for a worn look, but for valuable stickers every scrape destroys value, so treat application and scraping as permanent decisions.

Sticker crafts

A sticker craft is a weapon skin with a deliberate combination of stickers, chosen for rarity, colour, theme or all three. The term comes from the community rather than Valve, but it's universally understood, and free placement since 2024 has made crafting far more creative. Crafts gain value from three things:

  1. Sticker rarity: the scarcer the stickers, the higher the ceiling. A Katowice 2014 holo on an AK-47 adds enormous value; a common paper sticker adds very little.
  2. Placement quality: stickers that sit cleanly on the skin's artwork make a "clean" craft. Sloppy placement lowers value regardless of rarity.
  3. The base skin: top crafts start with a desirable skin in a good float range; our CS2 float value guide covers that side.

When a stickered weapon is traded or sold, the stickers go with it, so a good craft trades as one item with the combined value priced in. Scraping stickers off a craft destroys that premium permanently.

Sticker finishes

Stickers come in several finishes, and the same design is usually far rarer and pricier in the special finishes:

FinishWhat it looks likeValue note
PaperFlat, matte printThe most common and cheapest finish
GlitterSparkling, fractured textureA newer finish that appears in more recent capsules
HoloShifts through a rainbow shimmer as the gun movesThe most sought-after finish on classic tournament stickers
FoilMetallic, mirror-like sheenOften among the priciest versions of team stickers
GoldGold-coloured foil effectRare; strong collector premium
LenticularShows depth or changes as you view it from different anglesThe newest of the main finishes

A handful of embroidered stickers also exist, with a stitched, fabric-like texture. In practice, holo, foil and gold versions of scarce stickers drive most of the market activity, and on old tournament stickers the gap between finishes can be enormous.

Why old Major stickers cost a fortune

The Katowice 2014 stickers are the classic example of scarcity. EMS One Katowice 2014 was the first Major with team sticker capsules, released in March 2014 when the player base was a fraction of today's, and those capsules stopped being sold when the event ended. The iBUYPOWER holo from that set sold for a dollar or less at the time; today it trades for tens of thousands of dollars on third-party markets.

The dynamic is simple: no new supply can ever be created, because the tournament will never happen again, while every sticker that gets applied and scraped, or lost in a deleted inventory, removes supply for good. Demand from collectors, meanwhile, grew with the game. Stickers from other early Majors, such as ESL One Cologne 2014, DreamHack Winter 2014 and ESL One Katowice 2015, follow the same logic at lower price points. How stickers add value to skins and accounts

Stickers can raise a weapon's value a lot when the sticker is scarce, the placement is clean and the base skin is desirable. The same skin with four well-placed Katowice 2014 holos can be worth far more than the bare weapon.

That carries through to accounts: an inventory with well-crafted weapons, particularly ones with old Major stickers, is worth more than an inventory of uncrafted skins of similar rarity. Buyers check stickered items closely, both for value and because a historic craft is a flex in itself. For the knife to pair with a craft, our best CS2 knife skins guide is a good companion read.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you remove a sticker from a skin without destroying it?

No. Once applied, a sticker can't be returned to your inventory. The only way to remove it is to scrape it until it disappears, so treat applying a valuable sticker as an irreversible decision.

How many stickers can you put on a CS2 weapon?

Up to five. Since the February 2024 update you can also place and rotate each sticker freely on the weapon's visible side instead of using fixed slots.

Why are Katowice 2014 stickers so expensive?

They came from the first Major with team sticker capsules, sold for a short window in early 2014 when few players bought them, and they will never be sold again. Over the years many were applied, scraped or lost, while collector demand grew, so the surviving holos and foils now command extreme prices.

Do stickers keep their value when a weapon is traded?

Yes. Stickers travel with the weapon, so a well-regarded craft trades as a single item with the stickers' value included. Scraping them off destroys that value for good.
