Rust Bans Explained for Account Buyers

QUICK ANSWER

Three kinds of bans matter on a Rust account. EAC game bans come from Rust's anti-cheat: Facepunch says they stop the account from playing on EAC-secured servers, show on the Steam profile as a game ban and are permanent unless overturned on review. VAC bans are Valve's: permanent, with no appeal, and Rust is a VAC-enabled game. Server bans come from community server owners, never show on Steam and can be shared across many servers. Every ban stays with the account whoever earned it, and an EAC ban can arrive days after the cheating that caused it.

A ban on record is the one problem a bought Rust account can't recover from, so it pays to know exactly what each kind of ban is. This guide explains who issues each one, where you can see it and what it means for a buyer, using Steam's and Facepunch's own rules.

EAC game bans: Rust's own anti-cheat

Rust uses Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC). According to Facepunch, an "EAC Banned" message when you join a Rust server means the Steam account has been game banned through EAC for a cheating-related violation. The ban stops the account from playing Rust on EAC-secured servers, and it shows as a game ban on the Steam profile.

Facepunch says EAC bans are permanent unless they are overturned through EAC's review process. Disputing a ban doesn't lift it, and Facepunch Support can't overturn EAC bans, review EAC's findings or speed up an appeal; appeals go to Easy Anti-Cheat. A Rust game ban doesn't block other games on Steam, but Facepunch notes it may affect some Rust features and the transfer of Rust items.

VAC bans

Rust's Steam store page lists Valve Anti-Cheat as well. Steam says VAC bans are permanent, non-negotiable and can't be removed by Steam Support. There is no appeal: a ban issued in error is removed automatically after Valve's investigation, and that is the only way one disappears.

A VAC ban applies to the game it was issued for, plus a handful of older Valve games that share bans. A VAC-banned account can still play single-player games and servers that aren't VAC-secured. So a VAC ban from CS2 doesn't stop an account from playing Rust, but it stays on the profile, and servers that check ban records can turn the account away.

What Steam shows, and what it doesn't

The Steam profile shows VAC bans and permanent game bans on record. Steam doesn't display temporary game bans or suspensions, and server bans never appear there. Valve's game ban rules also limit what a developer can do with one: it can block online play and item trading for that game, but it can't stop the account from launching the game offline or using Steam.

Server bans and shared ban lists

Owners of community servers can ban players from their servers for any reason, and Valve says it can neither prevent those bans nor help resolve them. Rust's dedicated server also supports centralized banning: a server can check a shared ban list each time a player joins, so one ban can lock an account out of a whole group of servers. Steam notes that third-party ban tools work the same way, with many servers sharing one database of banned accounts.

Because server bans never reach the Steam profile, no listing can show them. Many servers also run plugins that check a joining player's Steam profile, for example the number of VAC bans, the days since the last ban, the Rust hours and whether the profile is private.

Bans stay with the account

Steam is explicit: a ban stays on an account no matter who was using it at the time. Facepunch says the same for Rust: an account that was stolen and then used to cheat is not exempt. For a buyer, a ban earned by an earlier owner becomes your problem, which is why the record has to be clean before you pay.

A ban can arrive late

Facepunch says EAC bans may be issued with a delay, hours or days after the activity that triggered them, and the player doesn't need to be online when the ban lands. A clean record is a snapshot of the day it was checked, so look at the profile again right after delivery.

If a Rust account bought on BuyAccount is banned within 14 days of delivery for something that happened before the sale, our buyer protection covers it with a full refund or a replacement under our refund policy. A ban earned after delivery is not covered.

Phone numbers and bans

Steam can extend a VAC or game ban to every account that shares the banned account's phone number. Accounts that don't own the game still receive the ban, and they can't buy the game afterwards. Steam leaves this switch to each game's developer, so it doesn't apply to every game, but it is worth knowing before you put a phone number that is on another account onto a bought one.

Ban evasion

Facepunch's rule is direct: creating or using another Steam account to get around an active game ban is ban evasion, and accounts used to evade a ban face further action, including permanent game bans. Games bought on Steam can't be moved to another account to get around a game ban either. Buying an account doesn't change any of this: if your own account is banned, playing Rust on a new one is a risk you take on yourself.

How BuyAccount checks bans

Every Rust account is checked when it is listed. We only list accounts with no VAC ban and no game ban on record in any game, that are not limited and have no community or trade ban, and each listing says "No VAC or game bans on record at listing time". Server bans can't be checked by anyone outside the server. Payment is held until you confirm the account works, and every order has 14-day buyer protection; see our buyer protection page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Rust EAC ban be appealed?

Only through Easy Anti-Cheat's own appeal process. Facepunch says it can't overturn EAC bans itself, and an appeal doesn't guarantee that a ban will be removed.

Does a CS2 VAC ban stop me from playing Rust?

No. A VAC ban applies to the game it was issued for. It stays visible on the profile, though, and servers that check ban records may refuse the account.

Will a Rust ban affect my other Steam games?

No. A game ban applies only to the game it was issued for, and Steam says a game ban can't stop you from using Steam or playing games offline.

How do I know if an account is banned on a server?

You can't tell from Steam. Server bans live in each server's own ban list or a shared ban database, and only the server's owner can lift them.
