Valorant Act Rank vs Competitive Rank Explained

They sound the same, but they aren't: your competitive rank is your live standing, which moves with every ranked game, while your Act Rank is a badge that records the best ranks you won at during one Act. One tells you where you are right now; the other is a highlight reel of your Act. If you're buying or selling an account, read both, because they answer different questions.
Competitive rank: your live standing
Competitive rank is the tier you see after each ranked match: Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant, Immortal or Radiant. Within each division, your Rank Rating (RR) fills from 0 to 100, on top of a hidden matchmaking rating (MMR) that decides how much RR you gain or lose. At the top, Radiant is limited to the top 500 players in each region who also pass a regional RR threshold.
Competitive rank is fluid. It changes with every ranked game, it's partly reset twice a year (at the start and the midpoint of each Season, with five placement games), and a new Act asks for one placement game to restore it. Valorant doesn't take away rank for inactivity below Immortal; at Immortal and Radiant, holding a leaderboard spot takes regular play. That's why an account can honestly have been Immortal a few months ago and show Ascendant today.
Act Rank: your badge for the Act
Act Rank is different by design. It's a triangular badge that fills with small triangles as you win competitive games during the Act, each colored by the rank you won at. Once the triangle is full, wins at higher ranks push out triangles from lower ranks, so the badge shows the best ranks you won at, rather than your latest result. Its border upgrades as you reach 9, 25, 50, 75 and 100 wins in that Act.
Losing games doesn't remove triangles you've already earned, which makes Act Rank a good record of an account's peak during an Act. Each new Act starts a fresh badge, and past badges stay on the account, so a long-played account builds up a history of Act Ranks.
Side-by-side comparison
| Attribute | Competitive Rank | Act Rank |
|---|---|---|
| What it measures | Your current standing | The best ranks you won at during the Act |
| Updates | After every ranked game | When a win adds or upgrades a triangle |
| Driven by | RR and hidden MMR | The ranks of your wins |
| Goes down? | Yes, with losses and at resets | No, within the Act |
| Resets | Partly, twice a year; one placement game per new Act | New badge each Act |
| Best used to prove | Where the account plays today | How high it won during an Act |
Why both matter when you buy an account
- Competitive rank tells you where you'll start. Buy an account, and its current rank (and hidden MMR) is roughly where you'll be playing.
- Act Rank backs up a claimed peak. If a listing says "Immortal account" but the current rank shows Diamond after a reset, Immortal-colored triangles in recent Act Rank badges support the claim; their absence should make you cautious.
- A history of Act Rank badges shows a long-played account rather than a freshly boosted one, which supports both trust and price.

How to read them on a real listing
Open the Career tab and look at both together. The current competitive rank should come with recent match history, and the Act Rank badges for the current and previous Acts confirm the peak. If a seller shows a shiny current rank but no Act Rank history, ask why: a legitimately played ranked account builds those badges naturally. Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Act Rank and competitive rank?
Competitive rank is your current tier, and it changes after every ranked game. Act Rank is a badge for the current Act that fills with your wins and keeps the best ranks you won at. One shows where you are now; the other shows how high you won during the Act.
Does Act Rank go down?
No. Losses don't remove triangles you've already earned, so the badge keeps your best wins for the rest of the Act. Each new Act starts a fresh badge.
Why does my rank look lower than my Act Rank?
Because they measure different things. Your Act Rank captured your best wins earlier in the Act, while your competitive rank reflects your current form, so losses can pull it below your Act Rank peak.
Is there rank decay in Valorant?
Not below Immortal: inactivity doesn't take your rank away. At Immortal and Radiant, keeping a leaderboard spot takes regular play, because other players can climb past you.
