Steam Account Recovery: How to Get Your Account Back

Steam account recovery runs through Valve's help site at help.steampowered.com: if you can still reach the email address or phone number on the account, you can usually reset access yourself in minutes, and if a hijacker changed them, Steam Support can restore the account once you prove you are the original owner. For CS2 players, losing an account with hundreds of hours, rare skins or a hard-earned rating is stressful, so this guide covers every recovery path, the proof Support looks for, how to get stolen CS2 items back, and what account buyers need to understand about recovery before they pay.

Self-service recovery via Steam Help

The fastest route back into a locked Steam account is the self-service flow on help.steampowered.com. Use the website rather than the desktop client when you are locked out; it gives you more options and a direct path to submit proof.

Choose the option for problems signing in, then identify the account using your account name, email address or phone number. If the email on the account still works, Steam sends a code and you can reset your password within minutes. If the phone number is still linked, Steam can verify you by SMS instead. Follow the flow all the way through before you conclude you are stuck: many lockouts are solved here without a support ticket.

If your account was hijacked

A hijacked account is more serious than a simple lockout, because attackers usually change the email, remove your phone number and add their own Steam Guard authenticator. Speed matters.

Go back to help.steampowered.com and start the same sign-in recovery flow. If the attacker changed the contact details, the flow leads you to a support ticket: submit it straight away with as much proof of ownership as you can gather (see the next section).

Once you are back in, don't stop at a new password. Remove any email or phone number you don't recognise, revoke the attacker's authenticator and add your own, and check your inventory and trade history. For CS2 items there is now an important safety net: since July 2025, CS2 items sent in a trade are trade protected for 7 days, and the account that sent them can reverse the trade during that window. If a hijacker traded your skins away and you recover the account quickly, you may be able to pull them back. Reversing a trade puts a 30-day trading and Community Market restriction on the reversing account, but it can be worth it for valuable items.

What proof Steam accepts

When self-service can't verify you, Steam Support looks for evidence that you are the account's original owner. Specific, verifiable details carry far more weight than "I've had this account for years". Useful proof includes:

  • Purchase and payment details. For example, the last four digits of a card used on the account, or the PayPal address used for past purchases.
  • CD keys or retail codes that were activated on the account.
  • The original email address used to register the account, even if it has since been changed.
  • The phone number that was linked before the hijack.
  • Approximate creation date and country as supporting detail.

Put everything into one clear, well-organised ticket and add follow-up details to that same ticket rather than opening new ones, which only creates duplicates for Support to sort through.

After recovery: lock it down

The most common reason an account is hijacked twice is that the owner restores access but leaves the original weakness in place. Once you are back in:

  • Change your password to one you have never used anywhere else. A password manager helps.
  • Audit the linked email and phone. Remove anything you don't recognise and secure the email account with its own 2FA.
  • Enable the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator. It is the most effective way to stop future takeovers; see our guide to enabling 2FA on game accounts.
  • Deauthorize all other devices so any session the attacker still has is signed out.
  • Review third-party site access and revoke trading or stats sites you don't recognise.

The usual ways accounts get compromised are phishing links sent in Steam chat, malware from unofficial tools, and passwords reused from other sites that were breached. Fixing the cause matters as much as changing the password. Expect some trade restrictions after recovery: a password reset through account recovery blocks trading and the Market for 5 days, and changing the authenticator adds its own holds.

For CS2 account buyers

If you are considering buying a CS2 account, Steam recovery is the single most important risk to understand. Steam doesn't recognise account sales, and it treats the person who created the account as its owner. A seller who keeps the original email, purchase records or CD keys can use the same recovery process described above to take the account back after you have paid.

That is why a legitimate sale must include the original email inbox, why you should change the email, password and authenticator on the day you receive the account, and why you should buy through escrow with a dispute window that covers recovery. Our guide to changing your Steam email walks through the handover, and is it safe to buy CS2 accounts explains the recovery risk in more depth. The same principles apply to other platforms; see our Riot account recovery guide and Epic Games account recovery guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does Steam account recovery take?

Self-service recovery can take a few minutes if you still have the linked email or phone. Cases that need Support, typically hijacks where the contact details were changed, take longer and depend on how clearly you can prove ownership, so include your strongest evidence in the first ticket.

Can I recover a Steam account if I forgot the email I registered with?

Often, yes. You can start the recovery flow with your account name or phone number, and if you can't reach the linked email, Support can review other proof of ownership such as purchase and payment details.

Can I get back CS2 skins a hijacker traded away?

Possibly. CS2 items sent in a trade are protected for 7 days, and the sending account can reverse the trade during that time. If you recover the account inside that window, check your trade history for the option to reverse. Items the hijacker sold on the Community Market are a different matter, so act quickly.

Will recovering my Steam account affect my CS2 rank or inventory?

No. Recovery restores your access; your rank, hours and remaining items stay on the account. Only items that were moved out while someone else had control are at risk, which is another reason to act fast.
