What Is a Valorant Smurf Account?

A Valorant smurf account is a second account that an experienced player uses to play below their main account's rank, usually to practice, to queue with lower-ranked friends, or to start fresh on another server. Most smurfs are simply Level 20+ accounts that are unranked or low-ranked, which is why they sit at the cheap end of the account market. Here's how they work, what they cost, and what to check before you buy one.

What is a Valorant smurf account?

"Smurf" is gaming slang for a skilled player on a new or low-ranked account. In Valorant, a smurf account is any secondary account whose rank sits below its owner's real skill. It uses the same Riot login system as any other account and the same agents, maps and store. Only its rank history and inventory differ. For the wider debate about smurfing across games, see our explainer on what smurfing means in gaming.

Why players use smurf accounts

  • Practicing a new agent or role without risking the main account's rank.
  • Playing with lower-ranked friends. Ranked party rules limit how far apart teammates' ranks can be.
  • Starting on another server (EU, NA, AP, KR, BR or LATAM), since Riot doesn't sell region transfers.
  • Skipping the Level 20 requirement. Competitive stays locked until an account reaches Level 20, which takes many matches on a fresh account.
  • Content creation, where streamers keep separate accounts for different formats.

How ranked works on a new account

A new account needs Account Level 20 to queue Competitive. It then plays five placement games, and the highest rank you can place into from those games is Ascendant 3. The ladder runs Iron, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Ascendant and Immortal (three divisions each), then Radiant, which is limited to the top 500 players in each region. Ranks are fully reset twice a year, at the start of each Season and at its midpoint, with five placement games again. Each new Act in between needs just one placement game. For where each tier sits in the player base, see the Valorant rank distribution.

Unranked vs placed smurfs

  • Unranked (Level 20+). The account can queue Competitive but hasn't played its placements. Your own results decide the rank, and these are usually the cheapest accounts.
  • Placed. The seller has already played the placements, so the account shows a rank such as Silver 2 or Gold 3. You start at a known tier.
  • "High MMR" claims. Some listings promise a hidden matchmaking rating that will place you higher. Riot doesn't show MMR anywhere, so a buyer can't verify that claim. Treat it as marketing, not a feature.

How much does a Valorant smurf account cost?

On our marketplace on 25 September 2026, unranked accounts with fewer than 10 skins had a median asking price of about $69 across 370 listings, with the middle half between roughly $35 and $216. The cheapest 205 Valorant listings asked under $50, with a median of about $33. Knives, Champions skins or an already-placed rank push the price up quickly. These are asking prices from our own listings, not completed sales. Our guide to the cheapest Valorant accounts covers the budget tier in detail, and the Valorant account value guide shows the full market.

What to check before buying a smurf

  • Region. It must match where you and your friends play.
  • Full email access. Without the original inbox you can't fully secure the account.
  • Level and rank status. Level 20+ if you want to play ranked right away, and unranked or placed depending on your goal.
  • Skins, if they matter to you. Ask for a view of the in-game Collection tab.
  • Buyer protection. Pay through a platform that holds the money until the account works. Every BuyAccount order has 14-day buyer protection, and our guide to the best sites to buy Valorant accounts compares the protection other platforms offer.

Our guide on whether it's safe to buy a Valorant account explains the main risk, recovery through the original email, and how to rule it out.

Riot's rules and the ethics question

Riot's Terms of Service say accounts can't be sold, shared or transferred, so buying a smurf is against the rules in the formal sense. In practice, Riot's enforcement targets how accounts are played: cheats, scripts, bot-leveled farms and boosting. A hand-leveled smurf that you secure and play yourself isn't what those systems look for, which keeps the practical risk low, though never zero. The smurfs to avoid are bot-leveled or previously flagged accounts, and cheating on any account is what reliably gets it banned.

Smurfing also affects other players: someone far above the lobby's skill makes matches one-sided until matchmaking catches up. Valorant matches players on a hidden rating, so an account that keeps winning well above its visible rank climbs quickly. If you use a second account at all, keep it short and purposeful, for practicing a new agent or playing with friends, not for farming lower-ranked lobbies.

What to do in the first hour after buying

  1. Log into the included email and confirm you can read new messages, then change its password.
  2. Change the Riot password and account email at account.riotgames.com. Our guide to changing your Valorant email walks through it.
  3. Turn on multi-factor authentication, using the Riot Mobile app, an authenticator app or email codes.
  4. Sign out of all other sessions from the account settings.
  5. Launch Valorant once and check that the level, region, agents and skins match the listing.

If anything doesn't match, open a dispute on the marketplace straight away rather than waiting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I duo with friends in a different region?

No. Valorant only matches players on the same regional server, so the smurf has to be on your friends' server. Riot doesn't sell region transfers.

How soon can I play ranked on a smurf?

As soon as the account is Level 20. From there, five placement games give you your first rank. A placed account skips those games because it already shows a rank.

Can a bought smurf account get banned?

Not for the purchase itself. Riot's systems target cheating, scripts, bot automation and boosting, so the smurfs that get banned are usually bot-leveled or already flagged, or ones the new owner cheats on. A hand-leveled smurf that you secure straight away and play normally carries low risk, though no purchase is risk-free. The bigger practical risk is the seller recovering it through the original email, which you rule out by getting full email access and changing the credentials the moment it's yours.

Are smurf accounts with knife skins worth the extra money?

Only if you want the knife. In our listings, accounts with no knife had a median asking price of about $146 and accounts with one knife about $165, while accounts with five or more knives had a median of about $358. For a practice account, a clean unranked one is usually enough.
